About the PC/Home and Online Filing Options

Horizontal Rule

How does Federal/State online filing work?

You use commercially written filing software available to the general public via the Internet that creates tax returns from information you enter. This type of software typically "interviews" the user, prompting for answers to questions. Once created, these returns can be electronically transmitted.

How does online filing differ from PC/Home filing?

With PC/Home filing, you purchase software that you install on a computer, and then use to create your returns. Doing this allows you to either electronically transmit your returns or print and mail them. Remember that if you print and mail in a paper return to the state, the processing of your return (and your refund, if one is due), could be delayed up to 3 months. Online filing is when you access software that is on the company’s Internet server, and use it to enter and electronically transmit your tax returns. Often, the term "online" is used to refer to both methods.

What are the eligibility requirements for e-filing?

If you choose to use a paid preparer, check with them to determine what e-file limitations may apply. If you file using one of the online options, eligibility requirements will differ depending on what software you use, and if you file your federal return through a separate process. If you file online, review the eligibility information located next to the link you use. Although the IRS may require one, no personal identification number (PIN) is required to file a Nebraska return online through the Federal/State e-file program.

How do I begin to file online?

First, review all the options provided, and then select the software that best suits your needs. Links are provided (above) to all companies that have been approved to provide this service. These links will take you to Web sites that will give you more information about the services provided, prices, eligibility, filing options, and access to the software.

What is the cost for filing online?

Costs for using online software vary from year to year, and by company. Some may offer discounts on the filing fees. These offers are typically provided to lower income taxpayers, and are explained elsewhere on this site. If you want to file online, a fee is normally charged, but it can vary, depending on the options you choose.

Who is responsible if there are errors on the return?

The responsibility for a complete and accurate filing still rests with the taxpayer.

Can I file just my Nebraska return this way?

Most software companies offer what is called "state-only" e-filing in the Federal/State program. If the software you select does not offer this capability, you will need to file your federal and state returns together, or use the department’s NebFile program. CLICK HERE to find out more about NebFile.

Is the accuracy and reliability of this method guaranteed by the state?

No. When using commercial Online filing software, this is a transaction between you and the software service provider. An acknowledgment or another form of confirmation will be provided to you by your software service provider, indicating if your return was received and accepted.

Is filing through the Internet secure?

The NebFile system is a product of the State of Nebraska, and is located on a secure Web site. Commercial online filing software providers build security within their systems. Check with the provider you choose if you have questions or concerns about security.

Can I get my refund or pay my taxes electronically, too?

If you have a refund, you can have it directly deposited to your chosen financial institution account. If you have a balance due and you file using one of the joint, federal and state filing options, you can request that the funds be electronically debited from your financial institution account, and you can delay your payment until the due date. You can also make your payment by credit card. These options allow you to make your filing totally paperless. To find out more about the credit card payment option, CLICK HERE.

What happens if there is a problem with my return?

If there is a problem with your Nebraska return, you will be notified in one of two ways, depending on when the error is discovered. If a problem is detected when your return is initially received by the state, the department will provide a code in your acknowledgment to identify what was wrong. For this type of error, you will be notified by your software provider. If a problem is discovered later in processing your return, you will be contacted by the state. Please be sure that you provide your daytime telephone number when prompted. In rare instances, you may be required to send in a paper return. In some cases, the department may send you a letter requesting further information.

What are the advantages of e-filing?

By using e-file, you can receive your refund in about 7 to 10 days instead of potentially up to three months. Also with this type of filing, you enter the data yourself, so you can verify its accuracy. Online filing is normally faster, easier, and more accurate than filing on paper, and you get the benefits of the latest updates to tax law built into the software.
