INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX PROCESSING STATISTICS

LINCOLN — This week, Tax Commissioner, Douglas A. Ewald, released the individual income tax processing statistics for the current year-to-date as well as a comparison to last year’s statistics.

Thus far this year, 74% of the total Nebraska individual income tax returns have been e-filed using some form of electronic reporting. This is an increase from last year’s rate of 70% e-filed returns at this same time. These numbers are subject to change as more paper returns are processed during the weeks to come. The Department of Revenue believes that the new, enhanced, and free NebFile option contributed to this increase (approximately 39,000 returns this year compared to 14,600 returns last year).

Total refunds paid to Nebraska taxpayers is over $257 million to date, with an average refund of just over $470. Last year, the state refunded approximately $230 million for the same time period, with an average refund of $442.

The Department has already processed approximately 633,000 (80%) of the 789,000 total returns received.
