LAST MINUTE TAX TIPS FOR NEBRASKANS

LINCOLN — With the April 15th individual income tax deadline around the corner, the Nebraska Department of Revenue (Department) offers some quick tax tips to those who still need to file their returns.

"Taxpayers still have time to use fast, free, and simple e-file options that eliminate paperwork and perform all the heavy lifting," said Tax Commissioner, Doug Ewald.

Last-minute tips that taxpayers should keep in mind include:

  1. Use e-file and direct deposit to save time, paper, stamps, and a midnight trip to the post office. Get your tax refund back fast - generally within seven days. NebFile is the Department’s free, easy-to-use e-file option. Go to the Department’s website and see if NebFile is the best option for you.

  2. If you owe tax, consider using the E-pay option, which allows you to authorize and schedule a transfer from your bank account to pay a tax return balance due. You can also schedule your estimated tax payments up to one year in advance with E-pay. You may also pay by credit card. Pay on or before April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. If additional time is needed to file the return, see page 3 of the 2009 Individual Income Tax booklet instructions for detailed information.

  3. Payment plans are available for taxpayers who are having financial difficulties. Check out the “Request a Payment Plan” information on the Department’s website. To set up a payment plan, you must contact the Department to make specific payment arrangements.
