Nebraska Individual Income Tax Filing Begins January 30
LINCOLN – The Nebraska Department of Revenue (Department) will begin accepting Nebraska Individual Income Tax Returns, Forms 1040N, on January 30, 2013. The Department will open the NebFile for Individuals free e-filing system and begin processing paper returns on January 30. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will also begin accepting and processing federal individual income tax returns on January 30, 2013.
You must complete your federal income tax return before filing your Nebraska return. Most Nebraska taxpayers will be able to file state returns starting January 30. Others, who file more complex individual income tax returns, will be able to start filing federal and state returns in late February or early March. Updated information on the availability of IRS forms and filing options for these taxpayers can be found at www.IRS.gov.
The Department will only mail individual income tax booklets in late January to those taxpayers who actually filed the forms included in the booklet last year. Since the Department will not process paper tax returns before January 30, there is no advantage to filing paper returns before this date. Taxpayers will receive tax refunds much faster by e-filing and requesting direct deposit of their refunds.
For more information on NebFile for Individuals and electronic payment options, as well as the most up to date filing information, see the Department’s website at www.revenue.ne.gov.
